Palace star’s relief at win over Southampton

James Tomkins believes Crystal Palace were overdue the luck that brought them a 3-0 win over Southampton.

An error from Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who miskicked a clearance, presented Christian Benteke with the opener.

Tomkins himself added the second before Benteke scored again as Palace ended a run of six straight defeats.

“It was a massive relief,” Tomkins told the club’s website.

“We needed a bit of luck, we were due a bit, and obviously we got that with the first goal, that took us on our way.

“It’s not just the way we won, it’s the clean sheet as well – that was massive for us.

“The lads are all to take credit for that, it’s not just the back four, five including the keeper, it was the whole way through the team that we defended well.”

Tomkins is now keen for Palace to back that result and performance up at Hull next Saturday, particularly with games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next few weeks.

He said: “Southampton was an absolutely massive game and this week’s is just as big and we’ve got the big boys coming up.

“We need to take each game as it comes and take the confidence from this result to Hull.”
