Allardyce rules out move for Rooney

Crystal Palace boss Sam Allardyce has effectively ruled out a move for Wayne Rooney if the England star leaves Manchester United this summer.

There has been speculation over Rooney’s future amid reports he could be on the way out of Old Trafford after 13 years at United.

The 31-year-old has indicated that he wants to continue playing in the Premier League, inevitably sparking speculation about where he might be next season.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday morning, Allardyce was asked whether he might look to sign Rooney if Palace avoid relegation from the top flight.

Allardyce said: “I think Wayne’s outstanding career means that at Palace, financially, it would be a problem for us.

“I don’t think there is any doubt about the player. His commitment and desire to play football has been proven over 15-odd years, but financially I don’t think it would be in our sphere.”

Speaking this week, also at a press conference, Rooney confirmed that he is keen to stay at United.

Rooney said: “Would I like to stay? I’ve been at this club 13 years, but I want to play football. Here? Of course.

“Of course you want to play. You want to play every game. Sometimes that’s football and I’ve had to keep working and try to take my chance.”
