Why Chelsea have decided to abandon a move for Achraf Hakimi

Chelsea have decided against pursuing a deal for Achraf Hakimi, according to the Daily Star.

Full-back Hakimi has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent months.

The Morocco international has long been touted as a possible long-term replacement for Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back.

He has been on loan at Borussia Dortmund from Real Madrid this season and his future is expected to be decided this summer.

Chelsea were said to be keen to snap the player up if Real are willing to let him go – and Arsenal have also been linked with him.

However, the Daily Star say Chelsea have decided not to pursue a deal for Hakimi, who looks likely to move elsewhere.

The reason is apparently that Reece James has impressed so much that Chelsea are no longer in the market for a right-back.

Having caught the eye on loan at Wigan and then recovered from a troublesome ankle problem, James was given his big chance in the first team by Blues boss Frank Lampard earlier in the season.

He took his opportunity in fine style, producing several excellent performances which further enhanced the youngster’s growing reputation.

And it appears that has cemented James’ position as the eventual replacement for Azpilicueta, with Chelsea seeing no need to look elsewhere.
