Sarri explains why Ampadu must wait for Chelsea chance

Maurizio Sarri has explained that he has been reluctant to make changes in defence, meaning young prospect Ethan Ampadu has had to wait for another chance in the Chelsea first team.

Ampadu, 18, impressed at the heart of the Chelsea defence when selected last season but has yet to feature since Sarri took over as head coach during the summer.

Sarri says that is partly down to him not wanting to experiment in the early stages of his reign.

But the Italian fully expects Ampadu to eventually be involved in the side along with the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

“I am very happy for him. At the moment it is not easy to give space to everyone. I have 28 players,” Sarri said at a press conference ahead of the game against Cardiff.

“But in the future I think I will be able to give a space to him, to give a space to Odoi and Loftus, because they are very young and they are for sure the future of the club.

“In this first period for me it was very important not to change, especially in the defensive line. But I hope in the future to be able to give space to everyone.”
