Merson: Higuain looks past his best

Former Arsenal and England forward Paul Merson has suggested that Chelsea could be making a mistake by signing Gonzalo Higuain.

Argentine striker Higuain played at Napoli under Blues boss Maurizio Sarri, who wants to be reunited with him at Stamford Bridge.

The player is currently on a season-long at AC Milan from Juventus and Chelsea have been working on a deal to take him to west London.

However, speaking on Sky Sports, pundit Merson said he has doubts over whether Higuain, 31, is cut out for the Premier League at this stage of his career.

“I’m not sure on him,” Merson said.

“He was a great player but looks below his best of late. He hasn’t pulled up trees for a while and now he’s coming to the hardest league in the world.

“He won’t have any time to adapt either as he needs to hit the ground running as Chelsea need someone to play as their focal point.

“I’d rather someone that has played in the Premier League before and knows what this league demands.”

Reports in Italy suggest a deal has been agreed for Higuain to end his spell at Milan and join Chelsea on loan for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent move.
