Former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas has questioned Chelsea’s decision to spend on Christian Pulisic when they already have Callum Hudson-Odoi.
The Blues this week completed a £57m deal to sign Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund.
He will spend the rest of the season on loan at the German club as part of the deal before heading to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
It appears to be another blow for exciting youngster Hudson-Odoi – and the hopes of the many Chelsea fans who would love to see a homegrown player finally establish himself as a first-team regular at the Bridge.
German newspaper Bild has described Chelsea’s decision to spend big money on Pulisic as “on the border of crazy” and suggested that the American playmaker has “stagnated” this season.
Speaking on Match of the Day, pundit Jenas said: “I think that’s harsh. He’s a very gifted player, Christian Pulisic.”
But the ex-Tottenham and QPR player added: “My concern is that they’ve got Hudson-Odoi already so why are they spending all this money on someone new to come in?
“What does that mean for Hudson-Odoi? They’re probably going to have to move him on and we lose another one (a homegrown player), don’t we?”
