Leeds United looking to beat Chelsea to striker signing – report

Leeds United are looking to beat Chelsea to the signing of Metz striker Habib Diallo, according to reports in France.

Diallo has impressed this season and the Senegal international, 24, was among several forwards linked with Chelsea during the final stages of January’s transfer window.

The Sun reported at the time that Chelsea had launched a £17m bid for Diallo. But Metz were determined to keep him for at least the rest of the season and he ended up staying with them.

Blues boss Frank Lampard was keen to add to his attacking options but was unable to do so – and is widely expected to make signings when the window reopens.

French media reports suggest he remains interested in Diallo, who has also been linked with Crystal Palace.

However, French publication LeFoot say Leeds are also interested in signing him.

Leeds were on course for promotion when the season was halted by the coronavirus pandemic and will inevitably spend if they reach the Premier League.

They might also be able to offer Diallo the prospect of regular first-team football at Elland Road, whereas competition for places at Chelsea would be more intense – especially if Lampard adds significant numbers to his squad.
