Lampard reportedly focusing on Havertz deal, not new defenders, despite Chelsea defeat

Many Chelsea fans are keen for Frank Lampard to bolster his options at centre-back following the defeat at West Ham – but it seems like that won’t be happening.

Lampard’s side were beaten 3-2 at the London Stadium, where they looked vulnerable at the back throughout.

It’s certainly not the first time Chelsea have been poor at the back this season – and many fans on social media have been calling for improvements to be made an centre-back.

The performance of Antonio Rudiger has come under particular scrutiny.

The German continues to divide opinion and his performance on Wednesday will do little to change the minds of his doubters.

Rudiger was caught out a number of times, including in the build up to West Ham’s last minute winner, while Andreas Christensen struggled alongside him too.

But Blues boss Lampard refused to blame them after the defeat.

When asked at his post-match press conference if he had been let down by his defenders, he simply insisted the team as a whole made costly errors.

“No. I’ve not been let down by the defenders,” Lampard said.

“We made mistakes in the build up to the goals – not just the defenders – which cost us the game.”

And Goal.com have reported that Chelsea are continuing to focus on bringing in attacking players – with Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz their first priority – despite the West Ham defeat.

Lampard has already boosted his forward options with the signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

But it seems he won’t be stopping there, with Havertz very much in his sights ahead of next season.
