Gilmour hands Chelsea a huge boost

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour is back in training after his knee injury.

Chelsea tweeted a picture on Friday afternoon showing Gilmour training with the rest of the squad.

It will hearten Blues fans, who liked what they saw of the young Scot when he impressed in the first team.

The injury was an untimely blow but it appears that Gilmour is edging closer to a return.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said he was hoping that Gilmour would return to action soon after November’s international break.

“Billy is working really well,” Lampard said. “He’s probably three or four weeks away from his return.

“He’s working outside with the physios at the moment but we hope to integrate him into training with either ourselves or the Under-21s at some point soon.

“We are probably looking at the other side of the next international break with Billy, all being well.”

Lampard’s immediate priority is the game against Burnley on Saturday, when Thiago Silva is set to return after being rested in midweek.

“Thiago is fit. Taking him out of the Russia trip was a maintenance issue for him, rather than him having any problems,” Lampard explained at his pre-match press conference.

“In this schedule, where we have game after game after game, it made sense for Thiago to sit out.

“I spoke with Thiago and if he had to have played, of course he could have. But we want to manage Thiago slightly differently because of the circumstances.

“He has ambitions to keep playing for a good couple of years and rightly so the way he looks and condition he is in.

“It proved to be a good exercise because we won the game and Toni Rudiger came in and did very well. We need competition for places and we’ve certainly got that.”
