Former Chelsea star quits over coronavirus fears

John Mikel Obi, Chelsea

Former Chelsea midfielder Jon Obi Mikel has quit Trabzonspor because matches in Turkey are still going ahead despite the coronavirus outbreak.

Matches in other parts of the world have been scrapped because of the virus but they are going ahead in Turkey, prompting Mikel to leave Trabzonspor as a result.

The Super Lig club have confirmed in a statement that the Nigerian midfielder, who joined them last year, has left by mutual consent. He was under contract until May 2021.

“There is more to life than football,” the 32-year-old said in on a post Instagram on Saturday.

“I do not feel comfortable and don’t want to play football in this situation. Everyone should be home with their families and loved ones in this critical time.

“Season should be cancelled as the world is facing such turbulent times.”

Mikel spent 11 years at Chelsea, making 368 appearances for the club between 2006 and 2017.
