Lampard gives injury update on Chelsea duo

Antonio Rudiger is edging towards finally making a first-team comeback for Chelsea.

The German defender, who has played just once for the Blues this season, is back in training after a recent pelvic operation.

Speaking at a press conference, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said he believed Rudiger will soon be back in action.

Lampard said: “He’s getting closer. He’s had a really good week’s work.

“But the reality is that he’s not played for a very long time, so it’s a mini pre-season now the injury seems to be hopefully finished.

“Now we need to get him properly fit and he’s working very, very hard.

“It’s days and weeks rather than months, which is great news for us.”

Meanwhile, Tammy Abraham has been ruled out of Saturday’s London derby against West Ham.

The Chelsea striker picked up a hip injury during the Champions League game against Valencia.

He is expected to be replaced by Michy Batshuayi, who has impressed in recent matches after coming on as a substitute.

“He has some pain and won’t be involved tomorrow,” Lampard confirmed.

“It’s a squad game over the course of a season. When opportunities come they’re ready and I’ve got confidence in them.”
