Havertz ‘has given Tuchel plenty to think about’

Former Chelsea and England Women striker Eni Aluko says the club’s record signing Kai Havertz has given boss Thomas Tuchel plenty to think about with a match-winning display in the 2-0 victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Havertz stood out on his first start since fellow German Tuchel took charge for the first time in the 0-0 draw against Wolves, playing a part in both goals.

The 21-year-old made a superb run for the opener, before his strike was deflected in by Ben Godfrey. The second goal – a Jorginho penalty – was the result of another intelligent run which saw Havertz felled by keeper Jordan Pickford and the midfielder also had a goal ruled out for handball.

Aluko, who spent six years as a Chelsea player, said the summer signing “had to take his chance” and did so.

“Havertz was involved in everything that was good about Chelsea,” she said on BT Sport. “His movement was very good. He made a great run and got good contact on the ball for the opening goal.

“His movement – along with Werner in the ten positions – really started to dictate the play.”

Havertz has had a stop-start time since joining Chelsea, interrupted by injury and contracting Covid-19. Aluko said he is still finding his feet.

“We don’t know yet what his best position is,” she added. “Is it a number ten, is it off the wing, is it as a false nine?

“He is getting in the pockets and linking up the play and showing some really clever play as with his run in behind for the second goal. He has given Tuchel plenty to think about.”
