Tuchel keen for Werner to work on staying onside

Thomas Tuchel believes Timo Werner’s tendency to stray offside can be worked on.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the Chelsea boss was asked if he was frustrated by Werner having goals disallowed for offside.

Tuchel backed the Blues striker but wants him to improve the timing of his runs.

“No frustration so far. We can improve on that and we will improve on that,” Tuchel said.

“He will learn from that – to maybe not take too much risk and maybe take a bit more care about his starting position.

“There’s room for improvement, but it’s one of his strengths to play on the edge and always give defenders something to think about because of his speed.”

Werner has struggled in front of goal this season but has earned praise for his overall contribution.

His work-rate and persistence have been impressive – and were underlined again when he set up Marcos Alonso’s late winner against Manchester City.

Tuchel said: “Don’t forget he was the guy again who gave the assist in the last minute, so he was involved again directly (in a goal).

“For me this is the most important thing – he is involved in our chances.”
