England were beaten 2-0 by Belgium in the Nations League on a frustrating night for Gareth Southgate’s side. Here’s how we rated the London contingent.
Ben Chilwell: 6
The Chelsea left-back was having a steady game before going off seven minutes before half-time after picking up what looked like a back injury.
Eric Dier: 5
The Tottenham man was poor. He never looked comfortable defensively and his passing was sloppy – not least when he gave the ball away in the build-up to the opening goal.
Declan Rice: 5
West Ham’s Rice didn’t have a great night either. He gave away the free-kick which led to the second goal and was arguably slow to close down Youri Tielemans for the first. His night was summed up when he won the ball deep inside the Belgium half in the second half but then gave it away and a potential chance was lost.
Mason Mount: 7
Worked hard on a frustrating night. The Chelsea youngster set up a chance for Harry Kane with a lovely flick but was much less deft with a free-kick he sent way over the bar.
Harry Kane: 6
Worked hard up front and linked play nicely as always, but not much came the Spurs striker’s way in terms of clear-cut chances. Blasted a late effort wide of the target.
Bukayo Saka: 7
On for Chilwell, Arsenal youngster Saka was eager to get forward and showed glimpses of his potential but was often crowded out. Did well to create a late chance for Kane though.
Harry Winks: 6
Tottenham’s Winks was neat and tidy after coming on at half-time but England needed more dynamism.
Toby Alderweireld: 7
The Tottenham centre-back was solid and composed at the back for Belgium.
