Ethan Ampadu showed his maturity in an impressive first Chelsea start of the season, according to Chelsea Women captain Karen Carney.
Ampadu, who only turned 18 in September, played the full match as Chelsea ended their Europa League group campaign with a 2-2 draw against Hungarian side MOL Vidi.
The Welsh international scored an unfortunate own goal when he diverted a cross past Willy Caballero from close range in the first half, but was otherwise excellent playing as a ball-playing centre-half.
Carney, who was working as a pundit for BT Sport, said Ampadu’s technical strengths and ability to read the game stood out.
“He will learn a lot. In possession, we know how good he is. He can play the simple option, but wants to play the forward diagonal ball trying to get players in attack,” Carney said.
“He can read the game well, and showed his composure, keeping the ball and always looking to get the ball forward.
His technical ability is superb.”
Carney also praised Ampadu for rushing to calm down his team-mates who got involved a late melee as tempers flared.
“He’s 18 and is bringing players away,” she said. “That shows his maturity and leadership qualities.”
