Conte not worried about Alonso’s fitness

Boss Antonio Conte has insisted he is not concerned that Marcos Alonso is in danger of burning himself out.

The Spanish left wing-back has played in all 24 of Chelsea’s Premier League matches so far this season and has made 32 appearances in total, scoring six goals.

But with Chelsea having sent Kenedy out on loan, Conte’s options are limited, although the Blues have been strongly linked with a move for Roma’s Brazilian full-back Emerson Palmieri, as well as his club-team mate Edin Dzeko.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Conte said: “I am not worried. Also last season we faced this situation in the same way. He is ready to play, and play every game.”

Conte also indicated that recent signing Ross Barkley will feature in Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

Barkley, who had hamstring surgery last summer, came on as a substitute against Arsenal this week – his first outing of the season.

Conte said: “If you want to accelerate the process, he [Barkley] has to play, not just a training session – especially in this moment with Willian and Alvaro Morata injuries as we don’t have other options.

“After a bad injury you need a bit of time to be fit 100%.”
