Chelsea are playing a risky game when it comes to complying with profit and sustainability rules, according to a leading football finance expert.
Trevoh Chalobah is among the players Chelsea are expected to offload this summer in order to balance the books.
Chalobah has been left out of Chelsea’s squad for their pre-season tour of the United States amid doubts over his future.
The defender is not in new manager Enzo Maresca’s first-team plans and is expected to leave the club before the start of the new season.
Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley has told instantcasinos.com that Chelsea are taking risks with their aggressive approach in the transfer market.
“I think we have seen Chelsea, in various examples, recently spend aggressively,” he said.
“It’s a high-risk strategy, we know they are right on the brink when it comes to their PSR calculations, and the Premier League will be aware of this and watching them closely.
“When you see Chelsea execute the type of approach we have seen this week with Trevoh Chalobah being left out of their pre-season squad with a view to selling him, a home-grown player, who can be sold for pure profit, it does seem to be a strategy they are employing in the short-term to manage their PSR situation.
“It isn’t illegal from a regulatory point of view, but from the player’s point of view, the strategy can fall down as when a player, like Chalobah, has had time and money invested into them being brought through the academy system just to sell them on, what does this show to young players coming through at the club?
“It isn’t something clubs should be pushing. But this is the reality of what a club can do if they are trying to fall within the lines of the regulations unfortunately.”
