Chelsea move ‘would be good’ for Liverpool keeper

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher would be a good signing for Chelsea, according to former Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne.

Chelsea have had problems in the goalkeeping department this season, with Robert Sanchez having been dropped by boss Enzo Maresca and his replacement Filip Jorgensen also making mistakes.

Kelleher has impressed as Alisson Becker’s understudy but Dunne believes his fellow Irishman might need to leave Anfield in order to get regular first-team football.

Speaking to William Hill, Dunne said: “If it does work out as people seem to think that he’s now going to be third-choice goalkeeper next season at Liverpool behind Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili there’s no doubt that he will then move on.

“He’s good enough now to be a No1, he’s proven that this season. At the age he’s at, he’s probably feeling ready to play on a regular basis and be the starting keeper for a team that is challenging for trophies.

“It’s important that he finds the right club. He’s got a real opportunity to have more success in the rest of his career, if it’s not at Liverpool, and he needs to make sure the club is suitable and matches his own ambitions.

“He’s no longer looked upon as just a young second choice goalkeeper, he’s one of the best keepers in the league, hopefully he finds the best solution.”

Chelsea have been widely tipped to sign a keeper this summer, with their fans hoping the Blues can sustain a serious title bid next season.

And Dunne, who played for QPR as well as Aston Villa, Everton and Manchester City during his career, thinks Kelleher might fit the bill.

He said: “Chelsea need a goalkeeper. Although they’ve probably got four or five on their books, they don’t have one that is consistent. Kelleher is proven and Chelsea would be good for him.

“Newcastle need a goalkeeper as well. There will be opportunities for him, it’s just about choosing the right one.

“The standard of goalkeeping isn’t as high as it was in previous years. Kelleher would be a good signing for a lot of Premier League sides.”
