Chelsea legend fires warning to James ahead of ‘crucial season’

William Gallas believes Reece James faces a fight for his place in the Chelsea side this season.

The England defender will be looking to put his injury problems behind him after a troubled year or so.

But former Chelsea centre-back Gallas says Malo Gusto’s impressive performances in James’ absence means a place in the team cannot be assured.

Speaking to Gambling Zone, Gallas said: “Reece James is going to have to come back to his best because Malo Gusto was excellent for Chelsea last season.

“Even though James is the captain, I think there are question marks about whether or not he will start because of his injury problems and Gusto’s form.”

It will certainly be an important season for James, who missed out on Euro 2024 and will be looking to re-establish himself for both club and country.

Gallas said: “I think this will be a crucial season for Reece James. How old is he now? 24? Time flies.

“James has to be careful. He has to be careful because he’s had too many injuries over the last few years and there are doubts about his ability to play 38 games in a season.

“He will need to demonstrate that he is capable of doing that, but I think it will be really difficult for him.”

Chelsea complete keeper deal

Meanwhile, Chelsea have completed the signing of Denmark international goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and are finalising the signing of defender Aaron Anselmino.

Jorgensen has been bought from Spanish club Villarreal for around £21m.

He has signed a seven-year contract and has joined the Blues squad on their pre-season tour of the United States.

The 22-year-old’s arrival could lead to Djordje Petrovic moving elsewhere.

Petrovic filled in when Robert Sanchez was injured last season but does not appear to be in new boss Enzo Maresca’s plans.

Jorgensen said: “This move is a dream come true. I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“I can’t wait to get to know everyone and to start playing with all my new team-mates.”

The highly-rated Anselmino, 19, is being bought from Boca Juniors up in a deal worth up to £15m and will then be loaned back to the Argentine club.

He is expected to also sign a seven-year contract.
