Ashley Cole claims Liverpool tactics suited Werner

Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool side have suffered five straight defeats at Anfield.

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole says Liverpool’s defensive tactics were perfectly suited to Timo Werner’s pace and will give the German striker some much-needed confidence.

The 24-year-old was a constant menace in the 1-0 win at Anfield, making the most of the home side’s high line and eagerness to press.

Werner once again failed to score, taking his goalless Premier League run to 18 games, and he also missed a glorious early chance from Cesar Azpilicueta’s hooked ball into the box.

But he had a goal ruled out by VAR for the tiniest of offside infringements and was unfortunate with another couple of opportunities.

“The opposition suited him,” ex-Blues and England left-back told Sky Sports.

“Chelsea put balls in behind in a dangerous space and Liverpool didn’t defend it well enough.

“He’s playing against a high line, he’s been in a rough patch, he’s going to be hungry.

“I like him playing off the left and making the clever runs in behind but it was a perfect opportunity to give him some confidence and exploit Liverpool’s weakness – and he got his rewards.

“When you play against Werner I would have thought you would understand that threat so need to adapt.

“Werner will go into space and try to exploit it, you want to stay high but you have to get ready to track back in position because the danger is the space behind.”

But Cole is confident Werner has the ability to play against all sorts of defences but says it will take time to adjust.

Cole added: “If you are going to play against a low block or a team that really defend as a five, or two banks of four, he will find it difficult at times, but he will get used to that.”
