Jack Wilshere was sent off as Arsenal’s Under-23s overcame their Manchester City counterparts 4-3 at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
Midfielder Wilshere, who has not featured for the Gunners’ first team in almost a year, was incensed at being fouled by a crude challenge and shoved over the guilty party, City’s Matthew Smith.
That sparked a fracas involving players from both teams and the visitors’ Tyreke Wilson also saw red.
Arsenal were 4-1 up at that point, but Brahim Diaz’s goal and a penalty from Lukas Nmecha – after a foul by Krystian Bielik – reduced the deficit.
Reiss Nelson had put the home side ahead with a curling effort and the lead was doubled shortly afterwards by Eddie Nketiah, after Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ cross from the right.
Smith pulled one back for City but Nketiah restored Arsenal’s two-goal advantage before half time.
Nelson then got his second and the Gunners’ fourth, following good work by Josh da Silva, before Wilshere’s dismissal gave City a route back into the game.
Rob Holding also played in the Premier League 2 match.
