Jose Mourinho said he felt it was appropriate for Sir Alex Ferguson to make a presentation to Arsene Wenger ahead of the Arsenal manager’s Old Trafford farewell.
Wenger, who will step down as Gunners boss at the end of the season, has been involved in many memorable clashes with United and has often been the villain at Old Trafford.
But he was given a fantastic reception by United fans on his final game there as Arsenal manager.
Most of his confrontations with United over the years were when Ferguson was in charge of United.
So current United boss Mourinho felt it fitting that the Scot presented Wenger with a silver vase before kick-off.
“I think we did it fantastically well as a club,” Mourinho said.
“I thought it would mean more for Sir Alex to come down than myself because as a United manager I played against Mr Wenger three or four times over a couple of years.
“The big rivalry in the history of both clubs was between them so I thought it was for Sir Alex to come.”
Wenger said: “Very nice. It’s classy and you enjoy it. I have come here for a long, long time and next year somebody else will be on the bench and will get a very hostile reception as well, don’t worry!”
