Emmanuel Petit has played down Arsenal’s chances of winning the Champions League following their astonishing 7-1 thrashing of PSV.
The Gunners are effectively through to the quarter-final after the first-leg rout in the Netherlands.
That has raised hopes that Mikel Arteta’s side could win the trophy.
But Arsenal legend Petit thinks that might be a step too far.
They will face Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the next round – and that will be a much tougher task.
The former France midfielder told Talksport: “I’ve heard some stories that Arsenal could win the Champions League. I said ‘Oh wait a minute, hold on, stay back a little bit.
“They will go through to the next round but they will (then) face one of the biggest teams in Europe.
“To be honest with you, that will be really, really tough.”
Arsenal ran riot despite injury problems meaning they played without a recognised striker.
Martin Odegaard scored twice and Jurrien Timber, Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori also netted for the Gunners in a totally one-sided game.
Petit admitted: “I didn’t see that coming, especially playing without your usual front line – so many strikers injured.
“What an amazing night. There was only one team on the pitch.”
Boss Arteta insisted Arsenal should “stay humble” despite the incredible win.
“You put your head down, be humble, and analyse how you can improve,” Arteta said at his post-match press conference.
“But we will enjoy this because it was a very impressive performance and an unbelievable score. We deserve that and I’ll take it. We were exceptional.”
The result makes the second leg essentially a dead rubber, with Arsenal all but sure of a place in the quarter-finals.
But Arteta insisted: “There’s still a job to do in London for sure in a week’s time.”
