Ryan Giggs believes England’s performance against Brazil highlighted that Jack Wilshere could still have a hugely important role to play for the national side.
Arsenal midfielder Wilshere was left out of England’s squad by boss Gareth Southgate because of his lack of game time for his club.
However, former Manchester United star Giggs felt
England’s ongoing inability to keep possession means Wilshere, who has impressed when he has featured for Arsenal this season, would be a good option for Southgate.
Speaking as a pundit on ITV, Giggs said: “To compete at the top you need to keep the ball, and probably the best midfielder if he keeps the ball is Jack Wilshere.
“He’s got to play [for Arsenal], but in a game like that you can give Jack Wilshere the ball and he will get himself out of trouble just like the Brazilians when England pressed.”
Tuesday night’s game at Wembley produced England’s second successive goalless draw.
They defended well against both Germany and Brazil, but ex-Wales international Giggs believes there is plenty of room for improvement ahead of the World Cup.
“Defensively very good against two good teams, and two clean sheets, but to progress you need to keep the ball,” Giggs said.
