Wenger hails Arsenal’s ‘exceptional potential’ after cup triumph

Arsene Wenger has insisted that Arsenal are making major progress under him despite their problems this season.

The Gunners failed to secure a top-four finish but ended a troubled campaign by winning the FA Cup with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

And, amid speculation over whether he will stay as Arsenal manager, and calls from many fans for him to go, Wenger is convinced things are heading in the right direction.

Speaking to reporters following the Wembley triumph, Wenger said: “This team is moving forward. The way we play suits our players and the way we function gets the best of the individual quality of the players. This team has exceptional potential.”

Wenger’s future is set to be decided at a board meeting – and the Frenchman has dismissed suggestions that winning the FA Cup would be the perfect way for him to bow out after 21 years at the helm.

“There’s no perfect way. I just want to do well for this club and apart from that it’s down to board members,” he said.

“I’ve tried to serve this club with the same commitment. This season we had some difficult moments but I spent every day of my season with full commitment. I refused to give up and my team refused to give up.”
