Arteta backs Berta to make impact at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has backed new sporting director Andrea Berta to make a positive impact at Arsenal.

Manager Arteta says he was involved in the appointment and believes it will strengthen the club.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on the eve of Tuesday’s London derby at home to Fulham, Arteta said: “Yes, we were all involved. What I liked the most is how much he wanted to come to the club.

“He was really attracted in the opportunity and he believes he can help us in achieving what we want.

“He is going to be someone who is going to impact the club. He has got that personality and charisma and the will to win, which is going to be contagious.

“That is what we want to achieve and to have people who have already done that is really helpful.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal are being linked with a potential move for Wolves forward Cunha after he declared that he wants to leave the Midlands club.

Berta helped sign Cunha for Atletico Madrid from Hertha Berlin in 2021.

That has led to speculation that Berta could look to take him to the Emirates Stadium – the Daily Mail suggests he might do so.

It comes after Cunha admitted that he would like to join a club challenging for silverware.

Several clubs were linked with him during the January transfer window but he stayed at Molineux.

And in and interview with The Guardian, he said: “I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it.

“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”
