Arsenal close to deal to sign striker Isak

Arsenal are said to be close to completing the signing of Swedish international striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.

El Nacional claims the Gunners have won the race for the 22-year-old after Sociedad opted not to negotiate a deal with Barcelona.

Isak joined Sociedad from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 and has since scored 38 goals in 101 games for the club – including 17 in 34 league games last season.

The forward has not been as prolific this season, however, netting seven times in 21 games across all competitions.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is believed to be on the lookout for a new striker this month, with the possibility that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could leave the club.

Aubameyang has been frozen out in recent weeks after returning back late from a trip abroad, and both Barcelona and Newcastle are among those to have been linked with the striker.

And fellow attacker Alexandre Lacazette also looks set to leave the club, with the Frenchman’s contract up at the end of this season.

El Nacional claim that Isak is “loved” by Arsenal and that they are “close” to signing the Swede.

Responding to reports linking him with a move to Arsenal, Isak told the Independent in November: “I’m in a good place at the moment, I’m very happy, but one day it would be nice to play in England as well.

“They have six or seven of the biggest clubs in the world, it’s a very high level, and of course one day it would be an alternative.

“Every player wants to be the best version of themselves and reach the highest possible level.

“I have expectations for myself that I’m trying to fulfil, so we’ll see where the journey takes me in future.”
