West Ham United have sacked head coach Nuno Espírito Santo after a disappointing start to their bid to bounce straight back to the Premier League.
The Hammers are eighth in the Championship, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough, having been widely tipped to challenge for automatic promotion following last season’s relegation.
Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat by West Bromwich Albion proved to be the final straw. It was a second successive loss at the London Stadium, after a 3-2 reverse against Southampton, and left West Ham with only two wins from their last six games.
In a statement, the club said the board had reviewed the start to the campaign and decided that “a change is necessary at this time”.
Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also left.
Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will take temporary charge, starting with Wednesday night’s trip to Cardiff City.
West Ham say the process of recruiting a new head coach is already under way.
Nuno succeeded Graham Potter in September 2025 but was unable to keep the club in the top flight.
