Fernandez said to be ready to hand in transfer request

Enzo Fernandez has reportedly taken a decisive stand in his bid to leave Chelsea, with the midfielder reported to be ready to submit an official transfer request to facilitate a summer move to Real Madrid.

The Argentine international, who arrived for a British record fee in 2023, has sparked a major internal crisis at Stamford Bridge following a series of interviews.

Fernandez told Luzo TV that he would “love” to live in Madrid, citing the lifestyle similarities to Buenos Aires, and pointedly refused to rule out a departure at the end of the season.

The situation reached a breaking point last Friday when head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed that the vice-captain had been sanctioned for his public flirting with the Spanish giants. Fernandez was omitted from the squad for the FA Cup tie against Port Vale and will also sit out this Sunday’s high-stakes Premier League clash with Manchester City.

“I spoke with Enzo and as part of the football club, he won’t be available for tomorrow or Manchester City,” Rosenior explained at his pre-match press conference. “It’s disappointing to speak in that way. As a character and person, I have no bad words, but I think a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. We had to make a sanction.”

Reports from Spain, specifically via El Chiringuito, as reported by Goal.com, suggest the 25-year-old is now determined to force Chelsea’s hand. Despite a contract that runs until 2032, Fernandez is said to be frustrated by the club’s lack of stability following the departure of former manager Enzo Maresca and the team’s recent Champions League exit at the hands of PSG.

Head coach stands his ground

Rosenior remains steadfast.

“The door is not closed on Enzo, it is a sanction,” he said recently.

“When he has been on the pitch, there was no lack of commitment, but what he wants in his future is not for me to speak about. At this club, you have to protect the culture.”

The £100m stand-off

While Real Madrid have identified PSG’s Vitinha as a potential ‘Plan B’, Fernandez remains their primary target. Chelsea are expected to demand a fee in excess of £100 million to even consider a sale, despite the player’s camp recently expressing dissatisfaction that a contract renewal was not agreed upon earlier this year.

With Chelsea currently on a run of poor domestic form, Rosenior’s decision to drop his star midfielder is seen as the biggest gamble of his tenure so far, as he prioritises long-term discipline over short-term results.
