Conte targeting Champions League spot after Spurs victory

Antonio Conte is targeting a battle for a Champions League place after securing his first Premier League win as Tottenham boss.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg equalised and Sergio Reguilo scored the winner – his first goal for the club – as they came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The victory left Spurs in seventh place, four points behind fourth-placed West Ham.

And Conte wants his team to be ready to pounce if the top four slip up.

“We want to fight, we want to improve the position in the table,” he said during his post-match press conference.

“At this moment, there are four teams that, for many reasons, because they are working with the same coach, they invested a lot of money, at this moment there are four teams and there is a gap. I’m not scared about this.

“I trust in my players, I trust in my squad. We want to fight to stay close and fight for Champions League.

“Then if there’s one team that slips up this season or makes mistakes, we must be there to try to do our best.”

Spurs face NS Mura in the Europa Conference League on Thursday and their next league match is a tricky fixture away to Burnley next Sunday.
