Man Utd v West Ham player ratings

West Ham bowed out of the EFL Cup, losing at Manchester United. Here’s how we rated the Hammers players in their 4-1 defeat.

Adrian: 6

Left badly exposed by his defence for all four goals. Produced some good saves, including when he showed sharp reflexes to keep out a powerful strike from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Earlier, with the score at 1-0, Adrian produced a double save to deny Ibrahimovic, although the opening came about after the keeper’s poor kick.

Cheikhou Kouyate: 5

Consistently too slow to close down, and he inexplicably switched off in the build up to United’s fourth goal. Did create a late chance for Sofiane Feghouli.

Winston Reid: 5

Well short of his best. Never got to grips with the movement of Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney.

Angelo Ogbonna: 5

Won a fair amount of challenges in a mixed display. On the negative side, he was caused problems by United’s attack, allowed Anthony Martial to sneak away from him to restore the home side’s lead, and his weak challenge before Ibrahimovic tucked away the fourth goal summed up the performance.

Michail Antonio: 5

A horrible performance. Guilty of a hopeless challenge on Ibrahimovic in the build up to United’s second-minute opener, which left his team up against it. He also gave the ball away sloppily, which almost led to another goal, and was generally poor.

Pedro Obiang: 5

Overrun in midfield as United dominated. Failed to get a meaningful challenge in that might have prevented the fourth goal, although by then it was a lost cause.

Edimilson Fernandes: 7

Bright in spells. Passed the ball well, took up some good positions and created a good chance for Sofiane Feghouli.

Aaron Cresswell: 7

Was badly missed after going off injured as he was having a good game and his replacement, Arthur Masuaku, had a shocker. Cresswell was lively and a threat to United on the left flank. He played a key role in West Ham’s goal, opening up space for his team with a run that diverted United defenders.

Sofiane Feghouli: 5

Wasteful. Squandered a promising first-half counter-attack when he hesitated and was dispossessed when Ashley Fletcher was in space to his right. He also missed two late chances, first after being set up by Fernandes and then by Kouyate.

Dimitri Payet: 6

Bright in the first half and his shot led to the Hammers’ equaliser. Got through a fair amount of work off the ball too, but it wasn’t his night.

Ashley Fletcher: 7

Pounced in the box to score his first West Ham goal – against his former club – and always looked to make things happen. The service to him was poor though.

Arthur Masuaku: 5

Dear oh dear. United were able to bypass the left-back at will and two of the goals came as a result of his dismal positioning.

Manuel Lanzini: 6

Not bad after replacing the off-form Antonio early in the second half. His set-piece deliveries worried United.

Simone Zaza: 5

On the pitch for the final 19 minutes and sent a shot out for a throw and missed a free header in the box. Had more success – and showed faster reactions – at the final whistle though, when he was quick to claim Ibrahimovic’s shirt.
