Ian Wright and Ryan Giggs were among the pundits to praise Harry Winks after the Tottenham youngster’s encouraging England debut.

Midfielder Winks caught the eye in the 1-0 win in Lithuania, where Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot after their Tottenham team-mate Dele Alli had been fouled in the area.

England were uninspiring once again but Winks’ positive performance was one bright spot for them.

Speaking on ITV, former Arsenal and England striker Wright said: “He always wants to get it forward and that’s what you need.

“Yes, the (standard of) opposition, but if he’s got that in his mind and he’s going to do that against whoever he’s playing against then he’s going to do well.”

Former Manchester United star Giggs was also impressed by Winks, who used the ball well throughout and saw a well-struck second-half shot saved.

Also speaking on ITV, Giggs said: “He’s done exactly what he’s been doing for Tottenham.

“He’s not been outstanding, just a midfielder’s job; sometimes keeping it simple, sometimes passing it forward and sometimes running in beyond.

“There’s a real blend to his play and he’s been really impressive. Okay it’s against Lithuania, but he’s done his job.”
