Geoff Cameron is set to return for QPR against Rotherham tonight.
The American midfielder, who is on loan from Stoke City, has been sidelined since suffering ankle ligament damage in a challenge from Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips in December.
His return is a big boost for Rangers, who have certainly missed him during his time on the sidelines.
Steve McClaren’s side have lost eight of their last nine games and won just once in the league since Boxing Day.
They might also be able to call upon Cameron next season, with the player having recently told West London Sport that he would like to return for another season on loan.
There’s no doubting Cameron’s pedigree and the impact he has had for the R’s when he has played. But there are reasons the club might think twice before another loan deal.
Age
Cameron will be 34 by the start of next season. With the Championship being such a physically demanding league, and the player having missed most of this season, there has to be a question mark over whether to bring him back.
Philosophy
On a related note, Rangers have made much noise about wanting to develop young players. What would Cameron returning mean for the likes of Ryan Manning and Ilias Chair?
Finances
Cameron’s Premier League wages mean another loan deal could be a stretch for Rangers, who continue to face financial challenges. Re-signing him would involve using up a fair chunk of the budget.
