QPR youngster has been ‘unfortunate’ – McClaren

Youngster Osman Kakay was “unfortunate” to lose his place in the QPR side, manager Steve McClaren has said.

McClaren was speaking to Rangers’ website in praise of the 21-year-old after the club announced that his contract has been extended until 2021.

Kakay’s deal at Loftus Road was due to expire at the end of the season.

He has made six appearances this season, having started the campaign in the team due to the knee injury suffered by Darnell Furlong.

Kakay soon found himself on the fringes again after the signing of veteran defender Angel Rangel, who has been outstanding since being signed on a short-term deal.

But McClaren believes Kakay is one for the future and is pleased with his progress.

“He played at the start of the season and I thought he did excellently well,” McClaren said.

“He came out of the team and Angel came in and he has been unfortunate in that respect.

“But he is an exciting player for the future and I am delighted he has agreed a new deal.”

Kakay said: I have been here for 13 years and see QPR as my home so I am delighted to extend my stay.

“I have played six games this season and am very hungry to play more for the club. I have seen what it takes to play at first-team level and I hope there are more opportunities to come.

“Steve McClaren has been great. From the moment he has come in, the training has been really good and I feel I am improving every day as a player which is a real positive for me.”
