Millwall have not made approach for QPR’s Smith, reporter suggests

Millwall have not made an approach for QPR striker Matt Smith, local reporter Phil Spencer has suggested.

West London Sport reports that Millwall are interested in taking Smith on loan, but that his wages could be a stumbling block, and that the Lions made an approach after Tom Elliott was ruled out for around six weeks with a shoulder injury.

But Spencer, answering questions from fans on Football.London, said: “Millwall are monitoring Matt Smith’s situation at QPR, but at this stage it’s nothing more than that.”

Smith, 29, was a key man under former boss Ian Holloway and scored 11 goals for the R’s last season.

But he has been a bit part player under Steve McClaren, who has used him mainly as a substitute.

Smith, signed from Fulham two years ago, has 18 months remaining on his R’s contract.

Meanwhile, West London Sport also reports that Charlton are hoping to beat a string of clubs to the loan signing of QPR forward Paul Smyth.

Northern Ireland international Smyth, 21, impressed last season but has been overlooked by McClaren this term.

Smith recently signed a new deal at Loftus Road, where he is now under contract until 2021, but his short-term future seemingly lies elsewhere.
