Guendouzi must start for Arsenal, says Wright

Ian Wright does not believe that Arsenal boss Unai Emery knows his best midfield yet – but the Gunners legend is certain that Matteo Guendouzi should be in it.

Guendouzi was outstanding as Arsenal came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with rivals Tottenham in Sunday’s pulsating North London derby at the Emirates Stadium.

And former Arsenal striker Wright has no doubt that the youngster has what it takes to be a regular starter in boss Emery’s first team.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, Wright said: “Last season he played 33 games, 23 starting, and I think that stood him in good stead for this season.

“People say he’s playing too many games, but when you looked at the way he played he looks to get the ball into areas where it can hurt the opposition and that is what we need – especially with the forwards Arsenal have got up front.

“The problem with Unai is that he doesn’t know his best midfield trio. But Matteo Guendouzi has got to be playing.

“We’re talking about somebody who is excelling and really, really got to grips with it. He’s got the kind of energy and drive that Arsenal need.”
