Everton reportedly eyeing deal for Smalling

Everton want to sign Chris Smalling from Manchester United at the end of the season, according to The Sun.

The South Londoner’s contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer and there has been speculation over whether he will sign a new deal.

The Greenwich-born Smalling, 28, is said to be looking for a significantly improved contract at United, where he reportedly earns £90,000 a week.

Everton boss Marco Silva is keen to strengthen his squad in the next couple of transfer windows and is apparently keen to take Smalling to Goodison Park.

The Sun quote an Old Trafford source as saying: “Chris has been looked at by a number of clubs, but Everton have shown a lot of interest.

“He is out of contract next summer and there’s been chats over extending it, but nothing has been finalised as of yet.

“There needs to be some protection of the investment in him, so don’t be surprised if the new year deal comes in.

“If that doesn’t happen then he will walk away at the end of the season. He can also talk to European clubs in January, we’re aware of that.”

Smalling has made 192 Premier League appearances for United since being signed from Fulham in 2010.
