Man Utd could wreck Chelsea’s chances of signing Cavani

Chelsea could face competition from Manchester United in the race to sign Edinson Cavani.

Chelsea are interested in Uruguay striker Cavani, who has asked to leave PSG and is expected to move before the transfer window closes.

The Times and the Daily Mail have reported that Chelsea have made an approach to take Cavani, 32, on loan for the rest of the season.

Both newspapers say Chelsea would have to pay Cavani’s wages – reported to be £360,000 a week – and a loan fee of around £5m in order for a deal to be done.

But the Daily Telegraph say United are now also exploring the possibility of bringing in Cavani as they too are keen to sign a forward.

In any case, Cavani’s father has suggested that the player would favour a move to Atletico Madrid.

“He wants to join another club in Europe,” Luis Cavani is quoted as saying in the Spanish press.

“That would please me that he plays here [at Atletico]. [Diego] Simeone wants him now.

“I think there is a strong chance that he will go to Atletico. The option to join the club Atletico always remains in June.

“There are lots of other clubs but when you give your word to a team, you respect it. If tomorrow, if he is available and Atletico still want him, I think he will sign.”
