Chelsea linked with Man Utd prospect – but here’s why it’s a non-starter

Chelsea have been linked with Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes.

Metro say Chelsea are interested in signing Gomes on a free transfer at the end of the season, when his contract expires.

However, West London Sport point out that Gomes cannot leave on a free transfer because, at 19, he is too young to move under the Bosman ruling if he has been offered a contract by his current club and chooses to turn it down.

The two clubs would have to agree a deal otherwise a compensation fee would be set by a tribunal. Gomes has reportedly been offered a new deal by United but is seemingly unhappy with it.

Would Gomes be a good signing for Chelsea?

There is no doubting Gomes’ ability and potential. The midfielder has played for England at several youth levels and is regarded as one of the country’s best prospects.

However, it seems that the suggestion Chelsea could sign him on a free transfer is wide of the mark. That means the Blues would have to decide whether he would be a worthy investment – and the Blues aren’t short of young, talented options in midfield.

Gomes’ future might well be away from Old Trafford, but a move to Chelsea seems unlikely.
