Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger praised Jack Wilshere – and West Ham’s defence – after the derby at the London Stadium ended in a 0-0 draw.

Wilshere started a game for the Gunners for the first time since May 2016 and impressed.

But the visitors were unable to find a goal against the Hammers, who showed the same determination they demonstrated in their recent win over Chelsea and narrow defeat at leaders Manchester City.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Wenger said: “Jack did well, especially in the first half. He defended well for his first game back and it is satisfying.”

Wenger insisted he was not worried about his team’s lack of a cutting edge after they had to settle for a point despite dominating much of the game.

“It was frustrating,” the Frenchman admitted. “It was 10 v 10 in the final third and we couldn’t find an opening.

“They defended very well. They did it against Chelsea, City and tonight – and we lacked the sharpness as well.

“You go through periods where the finishing is not right. But I’m not worried about a lack of ruthlessness – that will come back.”

West Ham boss David Moyes was full of praise for his much-improved defence.

“We conceded too many goals before I came but we have tightened up,” Moyes said.
